Roosevelt Island, New York

Roosevelt Island captures the fascinating and sometimes curious history of an island located halfway between Manhatten and Queens in the East River. Until 1973 Roosevelt Island was Welfare Island, known for its lunatic asylum, penitentiary, workhouses and almshouses. Its 70s renaming was more a rebirth, and it is now a model planned community and thriving home to almost 10,000 people.

This book presents lots of heavily annotated archival images, and is part of the Images of America series that celebrates distinctive communities across the US.
